A Visit to Pembrokeshire in Autumn

Updated

28 August 2024

As summer winds down and a magnificent palette of golden colours begins to appear in the woodlands, throughout the countryside, and along the coastline, autumn in Pembrokeshire is the perfect time to grab your walking boots and enjoy all that the season has to offer.

With enough daylight hours to embark on an exciting outdoor adventure before a cosy evening indoors encourages you to indulge in some local cuisine, a visit to Pembrokeshire at this time of year will give you a chance to reflect and relax in nature.

Minwear Woods

This is your chance to take on a blustery beach stroll, a hike through history or a wild woodland walk.

As the sun-seeking crowds drift off, you can fully appreciate the vast expanse of Pembrokeshire’s west-facing beaches. It’s still crystal blue waters and calm conditions in these slightly cooler months, allowing you to experience some wild swimming or a sunset surf. Also, most beaches are dog-friendly after the end of September so that you can have long walks with the whole family.

Leaving the sandy shores behind, this is a great time to start a coastal path walk. Well-signposted and waymarked throughout, the rugged and lengthy landscape that makes up the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park can be tackled in small sections or by heading out on a longer trek to discover the spell of old Pembrokeshire during these quieter periods. Autumn on the clifftops is always the best place to spot the new seal pups and various migrating birds.

Heading further inland, entering Pembrokeshire’s ancient woodlands as this season takes hold highlights a diverse range of habitats and wildlife, letting you appreciate a tranquil walk or a rambler’s retreat under a canopy of colour-changing leaves.

Shaped by centuries, Pembrokeshire’s castles and heritage hot spots are to be enjoyed all year round, and during these autumnal months, even with the familiar chill in the air and as the nights draw in, there are still plenty of options to provide you with an invigorating day out. Many of Pembrokeshire’s historic castles offer seasonal activities that will help you learn about the history of Wales through traditional arts and crafts, and St David’s Cathedral gives you the chance to visit an ancient settlement.

There’s also an array of attractions such as live music and dance festivals and plenty of specially curated activities to help you celebrate Halloween, Bonfire and Fireworks Night, and the build-up to the Christmas festivities.

Dining out will help you get a true taste of Wales and is an ideal opportunity to indulge in delicious seasonal produce, recipes and dishes. A varied selection of Welsh food and drink festivals take place across the county, and pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants are likely to have better availability than in the sunny season and offer a friendly atmosphere.
